The Miracle of Holonic Emergence
According to Integral theory, one of the hallmarks of the Turquoise structure stage, at the level of consciousness, is that one begins to see holons everywhere.
A holon is something that is simultaneously a whole, and a part of a larger whole. In Integral theory this is the primary organising principle of reality, and the fundamental structure of the entire universe. Every whole is composed of holons – each holon is autonomous and complete in itself, comprising a larger and more complex holon.
But it is only as Turquoise emerges in consciousness that one begins to spontaneously see this structure. As one leans more and more into Turquoise, one realises directly that holons exist in every direction and dimension – all the way up and all the way down – and that awakening at this structure stage is inherently and naturally holonic.
Andrew Cohen’s work over the past three decades has been uniquely focused on this new dimension of enlightenment – collective or “holonic” awakening rather than merely personal enlightenment. While the awakening of the individual is always the foundation, this is ultimately only a building block that creates individual readiness for awakening into what Andrew calls Intersubjective Nonduality – a higher synthesis of authentic selves who have transcended their separate egos.
In this spiritually supercharged holonic context, where each individual has transcended the illusion of separateness sufficiently for the process to be fully moving through them, there is a seamless nondual experience of the individual self, and simultaneously of an emergent “new being” or collective self. Awakened intelligence streams miraculously through these two channels simultaneously as one ongoing, dynamic, nondual awareness.
This interplay between the awakened intelligence of the unique individual and the more powerful awakened intelligence of the larger holon is felt as an upward evolutionary pull – an ecstatic urgency, drawing each individual into a rising vortex that has a unique co-creative intensity and potential.
If we are to solve the defining issues of our age at the level of culture itself, we urgently need to look at our predicament through different eyes. By focusing our efforts on this emergent collective intelligence, hopefully we can begin to grapple with the many complex and challenging dimensions of our current cultural crisis: spiritual, philosophical and existential.
In this talk, Andrew Cohen explores the miracle of holonic emergence – the blueprint for a new kind of spiritual awakening and practice in which human beings can truly come together beyond individual differences to stake out new and uncharted co-creative territories. Within this emergent context, together we can begin working on new ways to solve the multiple crises that modern and postmodern culture has given birth to.
